Carrier Keynote:
The New Dynamics of Fleet Profitability
Michael Hoffman, Managing Director - Facility Services, FedEx Freight

Mike HoffmanWith a fleet of more than 14,000 power units, FedEx Freight has a unique view of how the economy has impacted the transportation sector and how the ripple effect will play out over the next several months and years. You'll learn how FedEx Freight keeps fuel consumption under control, manages fuel price volatility and uses its fuel surcharge policy to strengthen shipper relations. Michael will also reveal FedEx’s “green” fleet strategies and what changes he sees coming in the way of environmental regulation.

10:15 – 11:00 a.m.
Supplier Keynote: Diesel Supply/Demand Overview
Mike Studley, Director of Fleet Operations, Gulf Oil LP

Mike StudleyThe diesel price shocks of last year are over, right? Don’t relax yet! As the recovery gets underway here and abroad, diesel demand is poised to roar back faster than any other refined product and prices could skyrocket once again. Gulf Oil brings its unique perspective as a leading, independent fuel supplier to answer questions about the likely supply/demand balance for the next 2-4 years and predicts the impact of price volatility on fleets and shippers.

Bonus: Mike will also detail how Gulf Oil is aggressively pursuing fleet business with one-of-a-kind fleet card offers while other suppliers are pulling back.

11:00 – 11:30 a.m.
Refreshment Break
11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
Challenges Facing ULSD in New Fleets
Jim Vrzak, Midwestern Regional Manager, PFA, Innospec Fuel Solutions

The rollout of ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD) hasn’t been completely without problems. Engine makers and fleets are discovering the super-clean fuel becomes unstable in high pressure fuel injectors or common rail engines causing severe fuel filter plugging, lube oil filter issues, and exhaust gas recirculation valve sticking problems. Our expert speaker will outline solutions to this potentially debilitating clean fuel problem.

12:15 – 2:15 p.m.
Networking Lunch/Exhibit Hall Open
2:15 – 3:45 p.m.
Concurrent Breakout Sessions
Focus: Smart Fuel Tactics to Succeed in a Struggling Economy

Track A – Shippers & Long-Haul Carriers

2:15 – 3:00 p.m.
Blocking & Tackling Fuel Budgets
Glen Sokolis, President, Sokolis Group

Glenn Sokolis
Negotiating fuel price and supply is like facing your supplier across the line
of scrimmage. You need the right knowledge, talent and gear to ensure
your game plan is fool proof. In this lively and entertaining session, you’ll
learn how to:

3:00 – 3:45 p.m.
Can Strategic Fuel Buying Strengthen Your Fuel Surcharge Programs?
Brad Simons, President - Pathway Network, Simons Petroleum, Inc.

Brad SimonsFleets can get a handle on the thorny issue of fuel surcharges and actually craft them in a way to bolster their customer relations. Brad will outline how to contain non-recoverable fuel surcharge amounts stemming from idle time, out-of-route and dead-head miles. He’ll also show you how to calculate a “zero surcharge” fixed rate request from a shipper and understand the true delivered cost of your fuel. You’ll learn:

Track B – Government Fleets

2:15 – 3:00 p.m.
Combining Fuel Demand to Wield Buying Power
Richard Aland, CEO, Demand Pooling Global Services

Think fuel costs are out of your control? Think your fuel budget is forever doomed to fall short of your needs? Think again. Here’s your chance to learn how federal, state and local governments can save money, reduce shortfalls, reduce the cost of providing basic services, and control the rising costs of increased Homeland Security. Learn how to pool your commodity purchases including gasoline, diesel, biodiesel and ethanol with other governments while maintaining your own product specs and other requirements.

3:00 – 3:45 p.m.
Exceeding New Federal Fleet Mandates for
Secure Alt-Fuel Supply
James Gough, Commercial Fleet Director, US Marine Corps

With the dual aims of securing a reliable motor fuel supply independent of foreign imports and helping promote cleaner air, the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) is committed to pursue alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) wherever they are available and cut fossil fuel consumption however it can. James will outline how the USMC gears up for, procures, manages and fuels AFVs including CNG, gasoline and diesel/electric hybrids, flex-fuel vehicles (E85), B20, and more. He’ll show how the USMC has exceeded federal requirements in past years and has met and surpassed the goals of Executive Order 13149, ordering alt-fuel use. Bonus: Learn what new emerging fuel and vehicle technologies are on the USMC’s radar screen and why.

3:45 – 4:15 p.m.
Refreshment Break/Exhibit Hall Open
4:15 – 5:30 p.m.
Hedging Made Simple
Elaine Levin, OPIS Fuel Management University Instructor

Elaine LevinRisk management isn’t a speculator’s game. It’s serious business for fleets who count fuel as their second highest expense and their most volatile. No other cost center has a more chaotic impact on your profit margin than the diesel that’s the lifeblood of your vehicles. Weather, supply disruptions, international events, the NYMEX – each can mean the world to your cost of keeping wheels on the road. In this intense session, Elaine will take you through the principle instruments you need to understand to hedge successfully and get a handle on price volatility.
