Renewables and the Impact on the West Coast

Renewable fuels undoubtedly have an impact on fossil fuels on the West Coast. However, there could be a symbiotic relationship as renewable natural gas (RNG) could be a product that makes a huge splash in transportation fuels to replace CNG and to help power refineries. RNG can be a panacea for a refiner’s stationary obligation under cap and trade. A bonus in that it RNG generates a D3 RIN credit.

The LCFS program is demanding more from marketers and biodiesel could be one of the catalysts that could help not just with compliance but growth as well. Truck stops, fleets and some marketers have found success in using NOx mitigation additives that are available to allow biodiesel blends that go beyond the seasonal 5-10% allowances to as much as 20%.
