Our History

  1. 1977

    Launched Oil Express Newsletter

    OPIS began covering petroleum news with its launch of the award-winning Oil Express newsletter.

  2. 1980

    Launched OPIS Newsletter

    OPIS Newsletter

    OPIS deepens petroleum news and pricing coverage with the launch of the OPIS Newsletter.

  3. 1980

    Opened First Office

    Wall

    OPIS opens its first office in Wall, NJ, where many members of the OPIS team are still based today.

  4. 1986

    Launched Spot Pricing Services

    OPIS launched specialty spot market pricing services including JetFax, WestFax, LP-Gas Fax, and OPIS Overnight (feedstocks report).

  5. 1991

    Launched Satellite-Delivered Service

    OPIS launched PetroSAT, the company’s first satellite-delivered service.

  6. 1996

    Acquired Stalsby/Wilson

    Stalsby

    OPIS acquired Stalsby/Wilson directories in May.

  7. 1996

    Acquired Computer Petroleum Corporation

    OPIS acquired the publicly held Computer Petroleum Corporation, in August, cementing itself as a leader.

  8. 1999

    Launched First U.S. Retail Fuel Pricing Database

    OPIS launched its retail fuel pricing database  – the first of its kind for the United States.

  9. 2005

    Acquired Axxis Petroleum

    Axxis

    OPIS acquires St. Paul, MN- based AXXIS Petroleum, enabling the company to aggregate rack prices electronically.

  10. 2007

    Expanded Spot Pricing to Europe

    Europe

    OPIS hired its first Europe-based employee in September to begin global spot price expansion.

  11. 2008

    Expanded Spot Pricing to Asia

    In January, OPIS hired its first employee in Asia and opens an office in Singapore.

  12. 2012

    Acquired LCI Energy Insight (Now PointLogic Energy)

    PointLogic Energy

    In December, OPIS acquired El Paso, TX- based LCI Energy Insight, marking the company’s first expansion into natural gas market coverage. In 2015, LCI Energy Insight was rebranded to PointLogic Energy, which continues to provide trusted fundamental data and analysis to participants in the oil and natural gas sectors.

  13. 2015

    Acquired NAVX

    In March, OPIS aquired NAVX, the leading European and South American provider of retail fuel pricing, parking and Electric Vehicle (EV) charging location information.

  14. 2016

    IHS Acquired OPIS

    IHS, the leading global source of critical information and insight,  completed its acquisition of  OPIS on February 11, 2016.

  15. 2016

    IHS Merged With Markit

    IHS Markit

    IHS merges with UK-based Markit as IHS Markit,  a new leader in critical information, analytics and solutions that drive economies and markets worldwide.
